Replacing a consumer unit — often called a fuse box — isn’t just about upgrading old hardware. It’s about protecting homes, ensuring compliance with modern safety standards, and
giving homeowners peace of mind. As a certified specialist, I’ve helped countless clients make this vital upgrade smoothly and safely.
I’m a fully qualified electrician with years of hands-on experience and up-to-date certifications, including being registered with NICEIC . Over the years, I’ve replaced hundreds of consumer units in
homes and businesses, each with its own unique challenges.
Consumer unit replacement involves more than just wiring — it requires in-depth knowledge of current regulations (like the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations BS7671), testing and certification, and a
strong understanding of the property’s entire electrical system. It's not a job for general electricians or DIYers.
What makes me different?
I don’t just “swap out a box.” I carry out a full inspection, upgrade where needed, label every circuit clearly, and provide all necessary certification. I also take the time to explain the
changes to my clients in plain English.
Just last month, I was called to a property where the old unit had no RCD protection — a major safety risk. The RCD is the device that saves your life if you get a shock. You still will get a
shock but instead of 6 plus amps (depending on the circuit) you will only get maximum of 30mA. After a careful assessment, I upgraded the unit, tested every circuit, and resolved a long-standing
issue with a faulty socket that had gone unnoticed. The socket was had the Live and Neutral round the wrong way.
How long does it take?
Depending on the size of the consumer unit and how many people with have working on it. About a full day to replace, test and do the cert if 2 people are there.
Will the power be off all day?
The power will be off most of the time. We start by going round and doing a quick check of lights, sockets etc. Then the power goes off while the board gets replaced. The power will
go back on for awhile but will be going on and off while we do live tests. The tests involve tripping the RCBOs that we have used.
Do I need to notify Building Control?
Yes building control dose need to be notified but I will do all of that for you when I do the paperwork and register the works.
How much does it typically cost?
